Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ıvır zıvır sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bandajlanmasıyla oluşan kısa polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız lafıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok skorda polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). Esas ayrım peptitlerin kısa, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino hamız, gayrı amino asite kalıcı, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bandajlanır. Polipeptid konstrüksiyonsına katılan amino asitlerin her biri konstrüksiyonya peptid bandajlarıyla bandajlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir su çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Aşina en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda kâin “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine katılan amino asitlere lafıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki lafıntı, bağ yapmamış, erkin amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin gayrı ucundaki erkin α-karboksil grubu olan lafıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
