Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “ufak tefek sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine rabıtlanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit sözıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok skorda polipeptit madun birimi barındırır). çizgi fark peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, öteki amino asite kesiksiz, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle rabıtlanır. Polipeptid mimarisına sıkılan amino asitlerin her biri mimariya peptid rabıtlarıyla rabıtlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Ortalama bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sıkılan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, serbest amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öteki ucundaki serbest α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
